Insight_Gratitude and Appreciation..

Insight_Gratitude and Appreciation...

“If you don’t show appreciation to those that deserve it, they’ll learn to stop doing the things you appreciate…”

When was the last time you appreciated someone? When was the last time you expressed your gratitude to someone who made a difference in your life however small it maybe..?

And I ask this, I don’t mean saying a “Thankyou” which we very casually say out of basic courtesy, but do not really acknowledge the effort put forward by someone…rather to genuinely acknowledging and addressing the good …

As I pen down these words I remember a conversation with papa, where he was consoling me after a bad day at work, where I felt I was not being appreciated at my workplace despite of doing really well.

I was disheartened, felt unwanted, and being taken granted for. As he calmed me down, he said that it is not that my seniors or peers did not appreciate or acknowledge my efforts; they notice and make a mental note…they may not express it but they do know what I have accomplished even if they do not tell it to me directly…

At that point of time, I counter questioned; “Why is it so difficult to appreciate someone? Do we become smaller by acknowledging someone ? or It has something to do with human ego?”

Papa further continued that answers to the above questions could be different for different people, and I should not get disheartened and continue doing my work to my best potential without expecting anything in return…

As days passed, came another day at work; An emergency call to resuscitate a patient who needed immediate assistance…we managed to save the patient, who if would not have been attended to timely, could have lost his life...

Being a doctor and an anesthesiologist, all I did that day was my duty...Rather, this was one of the many times I had encountered a similar situation in my little career so far, the only difference being that this time, I was appreciated and acknowledged for helping and being able to make a difference!

As I returned back to my home that day, I could feel the difference those few words of appreciation by the patient, my colleagues and my seniors had on me…I had never felt happier about my job, my work or my duty..and I was only thankful and motivated to give my best every single day ahead….

This was just a small work-related situation, whereas in life we encounter several situations where we are at the receiving end and not a single word of acknowledgment leaves us disheartened and feeling unworthy...

Appreciating others is the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other...It is a person’s greatest emotional need to feel appreciated…

However small the job may be, however, little someone has contributed to your life be it your near and dear ones, your day to day helpers, your colleagues or your subordinates ….Appreciate the good and acknowledge it….It will not only motivate them and make them feel wanted, but it will stay with them for a lifetime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Appreciation can make a day, even change a life..Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary..”
